Preschool and Early Learning in Sandy

ABC Great Beginnings Sandy is a full-day preschool and early learning center. Children grow with us from six weeks through twelve years, taught by the same teachers who know them by name and know what they are ready for next. We are a working-family schedule with a real preschool program underneath.

We have been part of the Sandy community for over thirty years, and we still operate the same way: small classes, consistent caregivers, daily communication with parents, and a curriculum that actually teaches.

Meet Kerstin, Our Director

I’ve been working in early childhood education for about 10 years. I started with the company as a Twos teacher at our Riverton location and quickly realized this was the field I wanted to build my career in. Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to learn, grow, and take on leadership roles, which eventually led me to becoming the Director of our Sandy center.

What I’m most proud of is the sense of community we’ve created. Our teachers truly care about the children and families they serve, and it shows in the relationships they build every day. We have families who trust us with their most important people, and that is something I never take for granted.

When parents walk through our doors, they’re not just finding childcare. They’re joining a community. We genuinely care about our families and work hard to create a place where children feel safe, loved, and excited to come each day. Parenting isn’t always easy, and we want families to know we’re here as a resource and partner every step of the way.

My philosophy is that every child deserves to feel safe, loved, and excited to come to school. Some of the most important things we can give children are consistency, encouragement, and adults who genuinely care about them. I want our center to be a place where children can learn, have fun, make friends, and build confidence while parents feel comfortable knowing their child is being cared for like one of our own.

One thing I always emphasize with my team is building connections with each child. We pay attention to the little things, like how a child is feeling, changes in behavior, new accomplishments, or when they simply need extra encouragement that day. We spend a lot of time communicating as a team to make sure every child is getting the support they need.

Outside of work, I’m a wife and mom to three boys and a baby girl, so I understand both the joys and challenges of raising kids. Most of my time is spent with my family, whether we’re exploring outdoors, cheering at activities, or just enjoying time together at home. Being both a parent and an educator gives me a unique perspective, and I know how important it is to trust the people caring for your children.

What Your Child Learns Here

Our program is built around The Creative Curriculum from Teaching Strategies, the same research-based early learning framework used in public preschools and Head Start programs across the country. The curriculum gives us the structure. Our teachers give it life by watching each child closely and building their day around what each child is ready to learn next.

What Children Learn at Each Age

Infants (6 weeks to 12 months)

Our infant classroom is a slower, quieter place than the rest of the building. We follow your baby’s schedule, not ours. Tummy time, gentle floor exploration, songs and books, and a primary caregiver who learns their cries and their comforts. Language exposure begins on day one, and our teachers narrate the day out loud so babies grow up hearing words.

Toddlers (1 to 2 years)

This is where personality shows up. Toddlers start using first words, learn early routines, practice sharing without much success at first, and discover that art happens with their hands. We work on naming feelings, taking turns, and the beginnings of self-help skills.

Twos

Twos is when language explodes. Children move from one-word demands to short sentences, start asking why about everything, and begin to play near other children instead of beside them. Our curriculum brings in colors, shapes, letters as objects, counting in songs, and structured story time that twos can actually sit through.

Preschool (3 to 4 years)

By preschool, children are ready for real learning days. They recognize their letters, write their name, count past twenty, sit through a story, and tell you what their friend did at the playground yesterday. We get there through a daily mix of circle time, hands-on science, art, music, and a lot of free play, which is where the social skills get built.

Pre-K (4 to 5 years)

Pre-K is our kindergarten readiness year. The skills we focus on are the ones kindergarten teachers actually ask for: writing simple sentences, basic addition, following multi-step directions, recognizing sight words, and managing classroom transitions without prompting. Children leave our pre-K classroom ready to walk into kindergarten and know what to do.

Before and After School (5 to 12 years)

For elementary-school children, we provide before-school care, after-school care, and transportation to and from nearby schools. Children get homework support, structured activities, and time to just be kids. Summer programs continue with curriculum-aligned enrichment, not just supervision.

Kindergarten Readiness, By Design

Our pre-K classroom exists to prepare children for kindergarten. We use The Creative Curriculum framework, our teachers communicate daily about what each child is working on, and we have been preparing Sandy children for elementary school for over thirty years. Our pre-K graduates go on to Sunrise, Alta View, and Altara Elementary, and our teachers know what those kindergarten classrooms expect because we have been sending children there for years.

What you get from us is daily conversation with your child’s teachers, weekly insight into what they are working on, and a teacher who can tell you exactly what your child is ready for next.

Utah DWS Childcare Subsidy Accepted

We accept Utah DWS childcare subsidy. If your family qualifies for state assistance, we can walk you through what enrollment looks like. Many of our families use a combination of subsidy and private pay, and we make the paperwork as straightforward as possible.

School Transportation Options

We provide morning and afternoon transportation between our Sandy center and Sunrise, Alta View, and Altara Elementary. For families with both a preschooler and an older sibling, that means one drop-off in the morning and one pickup in the evening, with consistent caregivers who know both children. Learning does not stop when school starts; it just changes shape.

A Center Focused on Safety

When you trust your children to our care, you expect to find them safe, happy, and healthy when you return. Our outdoor playground uses rubber matting instead of traditional gravel, sand, or bark, which reduces the risk of serious injury and keeps substrate out of eyes, noses, and mouths. Indoors, we provide age-appropriate play areas and activities to keep every child active and engaged throughout the day.
